Izzy had to her first two ER visits within one week.
She started off with a low grade fever Sunday night while Marvin and Theresa were here. I figured she was about to pop yet another tooth but her fever continued to get higher. By Tuesday her fever was 104 and wasn't going down with Tylenol or peppermint essential oils, so it was time to call doc.
Now since we moved I have chosen a pediatrician in DM but haven't had any records sent over sent, that was my bad. So they couldn't see us of course or give us any advice over the phone, they suggested we go to an urgent care. Well Tricare will not cover urgent care unless you are referred by your doctor (which makes no sense. If I had a doctor to refer us, why would I go to an urgent care?) Anyway, that left us with the ER as our only option. So Brad came home from work and we headed to the hospital.
We got checked in and they go us right back to a peds room which was awesome. They did a preliminary check on her and said that her ears, throat, and chest all looked good so they decided to do a urine test to check for a UTI, which can have only a symptom of a high fever and nothing else.
So we waited for them to come in a catheterize Izzy to get a urine sample. She just laid with us and watch sesame street.
I was nervous for the catheter but Izzy did great. Of course she peed right as they took her diaper off so they weren't able to get much, but enough to run the tests. The initial read out didn't show anything but they said if the culture started to grow something they would call us. They determined it was a viral infection and would just run it's course. We were to give it a week and if her fever persisted or anything changed to call.
They gave her something for her fever and when it went back down to normal and she drank some fluids they let us go home.
But it doesn't stop there.....
Two days later on Thursday May 28th I was downstairs and started texting my mom at about 1:30pm because Izzy was STILL SLEEPING. Not napping, but hadn't woken up from her night sleep yet. I had gone in about 11:30 or so and took her temp, which was normal and she looked at me but didn't even move. When I left the room she closed her eyes and went back to sleep. I debated about whether or not she just needed the rest of if this was cause for concern so I called the ER back and they them she had been sleeping for 17.5 hours straight and wondered if I should wake her up. They said to bring her in!
This time Brad met us at the hospital and we got checked back in.
They watched Izzy walk between us and point and talk a little. They were of course ruling out meningitis and I was very thankful that wasn't it.
They decided to do a check x-ray and some blood work.
We headed to x-ray first
I was very impressed with the new machine they had for littles', they had a chair for them to sit on with the screen behind them. Brad wear a lead vest so we could stand on the other side of Izzy with the nurse and hold her still. The actual x-ray machine had a little screen directly above it that must have had some animation for Izzy to watch because I heard the nurse say, "Look at the mouse run" which she pointed at the screen. Izzy say perfectly still and with two quick clicks she was done.

Back in the room they came in to take blood and try to get an IV in. I have really tiny veins and to this very day they still bring in someone from peds to stick me. They had someone from NICU come in and they got the blood drawn but couldn't get the IV in, thank goodness we didn't end up needing it. I had to lay on my side with Izzy's body between my legs to hold her down which I held one of her arms. It was not fun but I think Izzy was a trooper.
Her blood work came back normal and although she was very lethargic, they gave us the all clear to go home.
Izzy started getting better each day after that and within a few days was back to 100%. We are very fortunate that she has only been sick a couple of times and the only remnants of her hospital visit is a bruise on her hand that just went away from where they took blood.
(I swat Izzy's hand sometimes when we are directing her. My mom came up to me last week and said, "Lindsay, I don't want to make you feel bad but I think when you swatted her hand yesterday you gave her a bruise." I said, "Mom, that is from the hospital, still" She said, "oh, good" ;)
